Amman – Exclusive

Prof. Dr. Atef Al-Kharabsheh, President of Al-Hussein Bin Talal University, has won the primary election for the position of Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities. The vote took place during a meeting convened by Minister of Education and Human Resources Development Dr. Azmi Mahafzah with the presidents of public and private universities, in which 29 university presidents participated. Dr. Al-Kharabsheh secured 16 votes, surpassing the absolute majority threshold (50% + 1) and decisively winning the race in the first round, producing a single consensus candidate to represent Jordan in the Arab-wide election.

The primary race featured four prominent academic figures alongside Dr. Al-Kharabsheh: Prof. Dr. Reda Al-Khawaldeh, Prof. Dr. Turki Obeidat, and Prof. Dr. Ahmed Al-Khasawneh. Their participation reflected the weight of the position and the sensitivity of the coming phase in Arab higher education. Dr. Al-Kharabsheh’s victory is a first step toward the post, as the final election is scheduled for March 2027 and is expected to be hosted by the University of Benghazi in Libya.

The Jordanian candidate now faces a key challenge: translating his strong domestic mandate of 16 votes into broad Arab acceptance in the coming months by persuading university presidents from across the region to endorse his candidacy. A parallel logistical challenge concerns persuading the current General Secretariat to reconsider the venue, given reservations expressed by several Arab university presidents over the difficulty of reaching Benghazi and related arrangements. Jordan is expected to raise this issue with the General Secretariat to ensure the widest possible participation of Arab universities.

Dr. Al-Kharabsheh’s victory has drawn wide academic welcome, with congratulations from university figures emphasizing that the result is a distinguished milestone and reflects the esteem and respect he enjoys in academic and university circles. There is a shared aspiration for an Arab academic achievement worthy of the phase’s ambitions and Jordan’s standing in Arab higher education.
